#Teamxdesign New Member Spotlight: Carlin Mumphrey

Carlin comes to us after graduating from LSU where she was Vice President of the Graphic Design Student Association (GDSA) and a member of Adfed, the Printmaking Club and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She also won eight local and regional Addy Awards and the Judge’s Choice Award in the LSU Adobe Creative Jam. Her skills, previous experience working with a number of brands and belief in the power of teamwork and collaboration make her a perfect fit for our team. Read below to get to know the artist behind the designs!

Position: Graphic Designer

Duties: Works closely with our team of designers on a variety of projects including corporate identity, web graphics, print advertising, illustrations, presentations, animations and collateral pieces.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a meteorologist for as long as I can remember. In 2005, for fun, I recorded, tracked and documented every single hurricane, tropical storm and depression. I designed a large book with all my data. That was actually my first true design project.

Before working at Xdesign, what was the most interesting job you’ve ever had?
During my first two years of college, I was a writing tutor and designer at BRCC’s Academic Learning Department. I met a very wide range of people through tutoring there. Every day was frustrating and crazy but always loads of fun.

What does your typical workday look like?
Mornings are when I’m most efficient. I like to put my headphones in and power through as much as I can before lunch.

If you could switch job roles with anyone else at Xdesign, who would it be and why?
One of the web developers. I only took one web course in college, but it was incredibly interesting and something I’d potentially like to learn more about.

If you could pick one theme for Xdesign to turn into a book about the company, what would it be?
Does Fly on the Wall: Xdesign Edition count? (Fly on the Wall is the name of Carlin’s senior thesis project where she illustrated all the funny things she heard people say in and around her time at LSU.)

If you could do any other job in the world, what would it be and why?
Probably an archaeologist. I’m a huge ancient history buff.

What is an item on your bucket list?
I’d love to go to Antarctica someday.

If you could choose one actor/actress to play you in a movie, who would it be?
Emma Stone (but not because of the red hair)

If you were a superhero, which one would you be and why?
Ironman, but for the wit, not the suit.

When you aren’t hard at work, where might we find you chasing your passion?
Sitting under a patio with a cup of tea, a sketchbook and a laptop

Do you participate in any community involvement?
I’ve been a high school youth leader at Grace Life Fellowship for 6 years. Now that I’m graduated, I would like to work with high school students specifically in art and design as well.

What is one fun fact about you that others wouldn’t expect?
I have birthmark on my left hand that is shaped like a smiley face.
